Tarifa is a little secret amongst the locals in Marbella and a popular 'escape' from the hustle and bustle of Marbella for a weekend. It probably sounds strange that people would drive 90 minutes to just another coastal area.
Marbella and Tarifa are quite different. Marbella whilst undeniably beautiful and cosmopolitan is relatively built up and can be a bit superficial at times. Tarifa is a bohemian paradise. There are cool kite surf shops where you can pick up the latest equipment, t shirts and the almost obligatory flip flops in funky colours and designs that everybody seems to wear. In Tarifa everybody is chilled, even the local dogs have that unique 'Marley look'. The old town is amazing for it's trendy little shops, lounge bars and restaurants. The recommendation is to find accommodation in the old town so that you can hit the bars in the evening without having to drive. Aside from the bars and restaurants you have unspoilt beaches and little beach bars / hotels like the popular Arte Vida. A little further along the coast you also have Bolonia and Zahara de los Atunes which are also worth checking out even though they are quite different and very quiet. A fews days in this area of the coast known as the Costa de la Luz and you will be itching to get back. Want to book a hotel in Tarifa? Get excellent hotel rates by clicking here
